MLM vs. Self-Employed: The same? Any success stories?

It seems to me like lots of Multi-Level Marketers want to position involvement in their businesses as "self employment."

I've sat thru a few pitches, and now tend to reject any "business proposition" as soon as the phrase "build your downline" gets introduced.

I also have a very adverse reaction when listening to someone talk about their "business" and they get farther and farther from any actual product, and instead wax on about the possibilities of building your "business," etc. -- witness a thread in this very Tribe pitching involvement in such a scheme, without even mentioning what the actual product is.

I've known quite a few people who have put a lot of juice into building their "businesses" and, after countless hours and thankless sales work, come up either upside down or just empty-handed.

So... are there any success stories? Have any members of this Tribe had good, rewarding experiences with any MLM systems, that actually approximate "self employment?" Assuming a level of remunerative success, do you also have a real connection with a product or service? Or is it just about stuffing the downline?

I'm all ears, I'd like to hear success stories; if there really is self-directed work that has a valuable impact and is organized this way, tell me; my pre-conception is that most MLM is really pyramid schemes, with a scant number of get-rich-quick winners at the top and a wiiiiide base of losers at the bottom and middle. By all means, show me why I'm wrong.

How do I choose a business?....There are so many....

When I evaluate a company, I look for these key points. Keep in mind, when I join a company, my #1 goal is to make money and to do it legitimately. I do not want to hurt anyone or rip anyone off. This is what I’ve learned and these guidelines will help you determine what company is right for you.
If you are not making at least 75% of the upfront commission when you make a sale, forget it. This means that you are doing all the work and the company and/or the person above you is making all the money.
If you have to have 1000, 10,000 or 20,000 people in your organization before you make any real money. DO NOT Join. Most people will NEVER get there.
If they teach you to hold home parties and invite all your friends. Run away fast.
If they have a sales pitch 2-3 times a day and only 2-3 training classes per week. This means that the company is more interested in selling you than training you how to make money long term
If you can’t break even or get into profit with 3 sales, forget it.
If you can’t speak with the owners or the corporate office via phone or webinar, Forget it. I like to know who I am doing business with before I will do business with them.
If it is a start up or in pre launch, forget. The chances of these companies becoming the next Amway is about as good as winning the lottery. At least with the lottery, you have a chance to win once or twice a week. You might as well go to Vegas and blow your money on a good time. At least you’ll have some great memories, see a great show and have a great meal.
These are not all the rules for success on the internet, but this is a great guideline to follow when evaluating an internet company. Use these guidelines to help you narrow down your choices for choosing a company that best fits yours goals.

We've all heard about the next BIG home based business opportunity. You know, the one that will make you an instant millionaire and you won't have to do any work to get there. All you have to do is send in your money and the next thing you know in 30 to 60 days you will never have to go to the 9 to 5 ever again. Yes, and I have a parcel of land ...

We also all know that marketing on the internet can be a risky business at best if we know nothing about the company or better yet some of the people that promote the company. More and more we all need to have our scam radar working overtime to decipher the real work at home opportunity from the Get Rich Quick scheme.

One of the best income opportunities ever offered is a "real" Cash Gifting program. Now with that said it must be brought to light that there is a difference in this type of program. Some cash programs in the past were just "pyramid schemes" dressed up for a night out on the town. So let's look at what it takes to make a real Cash Gifting program work for anyone that gets involved.

Cash Gifting can be defined as: The act of privately or publicly giving another person or entity a declared sum of cash, (as a gift) and giving it freely without coerce or consideration. Cash Gifting is in no way a loan or any type of payment for goods or services received. Now guess why it's called a cash gift... because that's exactly what it is.

Let's lay out a few of the reasons some of the Cash Gifting programs in the past have failed in a very short time:

1) The founders of some of these programs had no concept of how to set up a proper Cash Gifting program to assist the members with a working "business model". Any home based business or work at home opportunity needs a proper plan of operation to be a success, even a Cash Gifting program.

2) No tracking system was devised to keep all of the members abreast of what monies were coming their way or when to expect them.

3) There were no legal documents created nor provided to outline the transfers of cash gifts from one person to another.

4) In some instances there was no proven or tested marketing system provided for the members. Along with not providing tested marketing concepts, the members were set up to fail before they ever got started, unless they were seasoned veterans.

5) Without a way to track the members advertising efforts no one knew what, when, why or how their hard earned dollars were being spent and what in fact was their ROI. (Return On Investment)

So what did this all lead up to? In the past many Cash Gifting programs quickly got labeled as unethical and some were called pyramid schemes or even scams. Now, in most instances this was not true, but without a proper "business model", destiny prevailed. I'm sure a large number of us have received the "Send $5 to 5 people and you can make a kazillion dollars in the next 30 days" letter. That type of Cash Gifting letter is the perfect example of the old adage "one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch".

Single mom here. Looking to work from home so I can see my kid more. I am NOT interested in network marketing or selling Avon or selling drugs. But, I do want a nice life for myself and my daughter. I have a backgroud in management and am a certified medical assistant. The medical assistant stuff is really awesome but does NOT pay crapola.

Ideas, anyone? Should I start over in my career with sales? loans? If I did start over, what should I do?

I am not really interested in working for "the man" at $10 an hour M-F 8-5. Ick!

The REAL "Pyramid Scheme"

Over the decades, with every network marketing company I' ve participated in, I've heard people ask, "Is this a Pyramid Scheme"?

This never ceases to amuse me, because 99% of these people are ALREADY LIVING IN A "PYRAMID SCHEME".

Basically, in a Pyramid Scheme, one or a few people on the "top" benefit from the work of everyone "below" them. And no matter how hard or intelligent these "bottom-dwellers" work, they can never attain the "top" position -or at best, can only do so by making it their life's agenda.

Does this sound eerily familiar to what you're already doing for work?
Do you have a boss?
If you do, does your work help their business prosper?
Is the possibility of your taking over their position conditional on their retirement, or other means of resignation (including death)?

Or do you work for a corporation?
If so, what would it take for you to become the CEO -or a board member?
Do you get to make the decisions on the policies at your work?

Now there's a legal definition of a "Pyramid Scheme", and you can read all about it here:

Collecing money for linguistic activity

My company is taking off and I am getting a growing demand for all my products, including "Language Brunch".

However, I have not found a way I find comfortable of collecting the money ahead of time. I am now talking of up to 80 people reserving ahead of time. I do not want the money collecting part to turn into a full-time job and I do not want to hire an employee to do this.

I have found an honest person who is also a bookeeper and could subcontract this to her. It shouldn't take all her time either.
Any idea on how I should go about this: bank account, proxy.
Also a way of tracking the people who have paid when they show up for the activity.

The whole process hasn't gelled in my mind.

I mean, really it depends on how often you write and what you write about and how well written your articles are.

The reality is that if you write every day for a year (or, almost every day), there's no reason why you shouldn't be making more than $1,000US EACH MONTH.

The best part is, this is perpetual, passive income. Once you've written the content, it's there permanently making you money. You don't have to do anything to make money after that.

If you do it for a few years, it's totally conceivable that you be making more than $10,000US each month doing it.

If you just do it for a few months, you'll certainly make extra money. It's just hard to forsee how much.

There's no way for us to guarantee how much money you'll make for writing because some poeple will write better, more useful stuff than others. If you write junk, you're not going to make very much. If you write good stuff, you're going to make more.

health insurance

I think this has been covered here in the past BUT wanted to know if anyone has a cost effective way to handle this. I have a pre existing condition that makes it hard to get personal coverage for my daughter and I for less than $225 a month. I am self employed with a bit of temp work here and there. Anyone start a business than makes themselves the employee and offer benefits? Cheaper that way? For the record, I am not a huge Kaiser fan so am not really interested in looking at them as an option. Thanks for your advice!

My wife and I are what are called "Cyberagents" for a company from Florida (Willow), as independent contractors, and have been doing so for about 5 months. We take emergency roadside assistant calls, but there are other companies you can work for. What is great is that we can work in as little as 30 minute increment. I do it part time, and my wife does it full time. There are initial steps in the process, but it has worked out well for us, and is convenient. It also solved the expensive babysitting issue. And for myself - I can wake up on a Saturday with messy hair, log on the phone and work a few hours, and who know?
The New York Times Digital Edition actually had mentioned my name in an article the other day, as they called me up for a brief interview as to how it all worked... Pretty Cool. You have to be self-discplined though, and take it seriously, because although you are at home, it's still real companies you are taking calls for...

If you're industrious you may want to take a look at a very lucrative home based business on the side - great tax advantages and the money you earn you keep, instead of having taxes taken off each and every commission cheque - you don't pay your taxes until the end of the year and then it only goes against your actual profits ( so you can write off: vehicle leases, portions of your home expenses, business meals & entertainment, travel expenses, new business tools ie: computers, cell phones & bills, etc....
It is a great business and you get paid 5 different ways: retailing the product, sponsoring team-mates, pay level commissions, quarterly bonus' and if you qualify a percentage of the total profit of the company's sales.
The great thing is that you are also building equity - if you build a substantial organization and choose to sell it later on, you take the prospective 35 month income and that is your sale price.

Certification

I wanted to start teaching a class in one of my trades and at the end have the successful candidates be able to have something to show for it. How do I go about certifying my trade? For example: I know some belly dancers have certification courses, is this a state run thing or are they just using the words "certified" to make themselves sound more official. Is there a formal process to this or do people make up their own deals. Another example is tarot card reading certification. Both of these are unrelated to the trade I will be offering but examples of classes that lead to "certification".

Newly self employed

My boss reitred recently, I'm a commercial painter and have taken over some of our clients, It's been about 5 months, but I'm really on my own, don't know how long i'll last though.
I worked 92 hours last week to make like 1600$
I can't really afford to paymyself overtime though, imagine that? I'm making good dough, but i'm afraid about dealing with the IRS
The damn self employment tax schedule is so confusing, i'm a guy on skateboard with no business liscience, or insurance or employees. I'm a micro/ really micro business, i'm afraid if i start geting to legitiment, and have to charge a little more, all the contractors I work for will just hire Illegal aliens and cut me out of the loop.
Anybody ever been in smiliar growing pains?

With no prior experience or background in the industry I was sure to fail,right?....WRONG. Got some new exciting information for you - have a read!

As you know - my "big picture" is to eliminate expenses through healthy choices with a consumable product. It is true, I have been researching a company over the past 4 months after first being exposed to them at the Health symposium in the latter of 2004.

I have started a consulting firm that focuses on business intelligence/ competitive intelligence for companies.I am young, and having worked in marketing and business development throughout my career I know that I have the skills to provide good results to potential clientele.

Now, I have just finished a pro bono contract for a manufacturer in order to start my consulting firm - they liked my work a lot. I am looking to build a portfolio of 3 more pro bono contracts with non-profits to build my credibility before I actively start pursuing paying clients.

My question is, would you reccommend this type of strategy or should I immediately go after smaller paying clients instead?
